Eight Diamond Cutting Styles
Our adore of diamonds and admiration with their fire and brilliance has given rise to several different styles of gemstones. While we still see a number of the earliest styles of diamond cuts - like the round and emerald-cut, there are several more cuts today, a few of them patented by their makers and priced at tens of thousands of dollars.
Typically the most popular cut for a diamond ring today is still the round, brilliant cut. It was developed from the 17th century in Venice. It is still preferred in the event the raw crystal is due to an octahedron creation. Despite the fact that as much as 50% of the gemstone is cut away in the process, often two stones could be carved from an octahedron. More unusually-shaped stones can be used for fancy cuts, maybe a heart-shaped diamond, marquise or pear diamond shape. The first brilliants had 17 facets on the top of the stone and were called double-cut. This was soon upgraded with stones cut with 33 facets and had been referred to as triple-cut brilliants.
In the 1800s, with the development of better gem-cutting equipment, more innovations in diamond cutting styles were developed. In 1919, Marcel Tolkowsky put together the art of cutting with the science of refraction and light and released his book, The Diamond Design. These relatively recent geometric calculations had been the forerunner of much of diamond cutting work today and led to other, more specific mathematical models engineered to enhance the fire and brilliance of diamond jewelry.
There are now cuts just like the ovals, pear, princess cut, trillions and heart-shaped. Some progressive cutters have even designed star or butterfly-shaped diamonds! One patented cut, the Ashoka diamond, is definitely an oblong cut with rounded, brilliant ends, and need a stone 3 carats or larger sized.
